Faceted Navigation: E-commerce SEO's Silent Killer
Filters create infinite near-duplicate URLs by design. The decision framework — index, canonical, nofollow, block — that keeps facets useful for users and invisible to crawlers.
A 300-product store with eager filters can serve Google three million URLs. Google obliges, crawls them all, and concludes your site is mostly junk. Facets need a hierarchy of intent: brand+category facets earn indexable pages, everything else gets canonicalised to the parent or blocked at the parameter — decided before development, not after traffic drops.
Rankings follow satisfaction
Google's vocabulary changes every update; its direction doesn't — toward pages that resolve intent completely. Tactics expire. The job of satisfying the searcher better than the alternatives has never been patched.
Practically: the page that wins a query is the one that ends the search. If users pogo back to results from your page, no schema or keyword density can outvote that behaviour for long.
Write and structure pages to be the last click. It sounds soft; it's the hardest technical target in SEO.
The quarterly SEO health ritual
- Coverage audit: crawl stats, indexed-not-ranked list, orphan report
- Decay queue: pages down 30%+ clicks year-over-year, impressions held
- Cannibalisation check: multiple URLs splitting one intent
- Internal-link pass on money pages from the top ten authority URLs
- Schema validation plus a manual mobile SERP check on five money queries
- One competitor teardown — what they published, what linked to it
Links are earned reputation
Every durable ranking we've built has a link profile that looks boring in the best way: industry press, partners, genuine citations. The exciting profiles are the ones that disappear in core updates.
Digital PR works because it inverts the ask: you create something citable — data, a tool, an expert quote — and coverage carries the link. The pitch is the afterthought; the asset is the strategy.
If a link's only purpose is SEO, it's already decaying. If it sends a real reader, it compounds.

Measurement beyond screenshots
Rank tracking a keyword list is astrology with better charts. The metrics that run programs: non-brand clicks to money pages, impression share growth in topic clusters, and assisted conversions against paid's cost per acquisition.
We report movement against pipeline and mark every change to the site on the timeline — nobody argues about causality when the annotation sits on the chart.
Local intent is its own game
'Near me' queries run on proximity, prominence and proof — three levers most single-website strategies ignore completely. The map pack is the highest-converting SERP feature in local, and it's won in the profile as much as on the site.
What moves it: complete and honest business profiles, review velocity with responses, consistent citations, and location pages with genuine local substance — not find-and-replace city names.
Service businesses live or die by three map positions. That's a smaller battlefield than national SEO, and a more winnable one.

Where to start this week
Search Google for site:yourdomain.com inurl:filter or your parameter pattern. If you see thousands of results, you're bleeding crawl and link equity today.
Then keep it honest with a short list:
- Traffic grows but the money pages are static
- Reports lead with rankings for keywords nobody buys
- New content ships faster than anyone refreshes the old
- Put the date on the calendar — playbooks without Fridays are just reading
And when the scope outgrows the spreadsheet, that's precisely what our team is for.
Straight answers
How long until SEO shows results?
Technical fixes can move things in weeks; compounding content and authority programs need two to three quarters to show their shape. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling a keyword nobody converts on, or worse.
What do you need from us to run SEO?
Access, one decision-maker, and occasionally a subject-minterview. The frustrating requirement is patience on implementation — strategy without dev time is paperwork, and we help solve that too.
Do you guarantee rankings?
Nobody honest guarantees positions; we guarantee the process: technical health, deliberate topical coverage, earned links, and reporting that shows cause. Agencies selling certainty are renting your hope.
